THE CHALLENGE

Many learners in Grades 8 and 9 struggle with Mathematics, which directly affects their Maths and Science subject choices in Grade 10. When learners perform poorly in Mathematics during these years, they often move away from Pure Mathematics and Science, opting for Maths Literacy which automatically limits access to future critical careers in engineering, technology, finance, health sciences, and other critical skills and high-demand fields.

THE SYSTEM GAP

Although 40% is considered a pass mark for Mathematics at school level, most university programmes require 60% or higher for admission into competitive fields such as Engineering, Commerce, Computer Science, and Medicine. As a result, many learners only realise too late that their marks and subject choices restrict their university entry opportunities.

WHY THIS MATTERS

South Africa’s future economic growth will increasingly depend on mathematics and science, technology, and innovation-driven skills. Without early intervention, a large portion of the country’s potential STEM talent pipeline is lost before learners reach Grade 10.

EDUCATIONAL STATUS IN SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa proudly celebrates a 2025 Matric pass rate of 88%. But a deeper question remains: “What does a pass really mean if only 37% are accepted by universities, based on achievement of the institutions’ APS (Admission Point Score)?”

This gap exposes a critical issue – the quality of passes is not translating into real opportunities. Too many learners leave school with certificates that close doors instead of opening them. Thus, intervention measures are required to improve the quality of matric results per subject, especially those identified as critical. Our desire is to empower matriculants to achieve passes of at least 70% per subject, then more learners will be accepted by universities and the job market, thereafter.

The challenge deepens in Mathematics and Science. Only 34% of Matriculants take Pure Mathematics with the majority of these obtaining +/- 50% which is not acceptable by many universities, while the majority opt for Mathematical Literacy of which many do not achieve acceptable quality results. This single choice quietly reshapes our future workforce, shrinking the pipeline of engineers, scientists, doctors, computer scientists, chartered accountants, and technologists, our country urgently needs, which require mathematics as a compulsory subject.

The question is not whether learners are capable – it is whether they are being prepared early enough to excel in all their subjects.
